The design and choice of suitable packaging materials are influenced by various factors: the type of medical device, the intended sterilisation process, the intended use, the expiry date, and transport and storage conditions.

Medical devices and their packaging systems may only be placed on the market once their safety, suitability and performance have been proven. This proof is provided as part of a documented process – packaging validation.
